AVID's impact
AVID’s impact has been very
major throughout my high school career. It has taught me a lot about high school
and college. I have been in AVID since my freshman year.
At first I didn’t really see the point in AVID. But once I realized that
what AVID was teaching me about high school organization my grades started to
improve. I kept my binder organized and took my notes. AVID just isn’t about
schoolwork though! It’s about connecting with others too. That’s why we have
tutorial groups so we can help each other out and understanding each other. We
also have Socratic seminars and philosophical chairs too. Those really help you
connect with others because you have a topic and you give a person a chance to
voice their own opinion and you respect it. Being in AVID also gets you connect
with other type of kids too. Everybody in AVID isn’t the same. You have some
people that are extremely quiet and they don’t really talk. You can talk to them
and try to get to know them so they can talk more and make them feel comfortable
also. The Socratic seminars and philosophical chairs also help to bring out the
shyness in people. In AVID for your freshman and sophomore year it mostly
focuses on your high school career. When you’re a sophomore you do just a little
bit of college things. Then once you get into your junior and senior year you
focus more on the college level. Your junior year you start looking at the SAT
and ACT things, like the vocabulary and how to evaluate the test. Then you
that’s when you start taking the test to see how you would score. You also start
looking at colleges you would like to go to. Then once it’s your senior year you
should just start filling out applications, scholarships, start your resume.
simple things like that. Then you won’t have anything to stress about. AVID has helped me out a lot because
you become a family and you can go to the AVID teachers and talk to them about
anything! Their like your second parents. You also get to learn a lot about
college because you go on college tours and then previous students that they’ve
had come back in and talk to you about the college life. They tell you how much
college work there is and how you have to do your work and slack off because it
catches up to you. Most students aren’t going to listen to all this but once
they get in college they will and realize AVID has helped out a lot.
